This week’s Golf Legends Profile looks at Wyndham Clark and his burgeoning reputation within the sport.
Before placing your bets on Wyndham Clark at top-rated sportsbooks, let’s dive into the key milestones of his career.
Colorado Kid Has Finally Made Good!
Everyone in and around professional golf has known about Wyndham Clark’s burgeoning talent for many years before last year’s breakthrough major championship win at the U.S. Open.
There were many that had given up the ghost on the Denver kid after several years of grinding just to keep his playing privileges on the PGA Tour.
Things changed fast in 2023 for Wyndham Clark when he won the Wells Fargo Championship by four strokes from Xander Schauffele. That event at Quail Hollow has long been recognized as one of the premier weeks on the PGA Tour at a championship-style test, so the ease of the win raised eyebrows for golf fans and bettors alike.
Afterwards, Wyndham Clark’s career went from strength to strength as he won the U.S. Open five weeks later at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Suddenly, instead of fulfilling his potential at Wells Fargo, Clark’s career was flourishing at the elite level, so much so, that last week he represented the United States at the Olympics, in Paris, something that was unimaginable at the start of 2023.
So, What Changed for Wyndham Clark?
The brilliant Netflix second series Full Swing (2024) featured episode three, where Wyndham Clark and Joel Dahmen documented the mental struggles of a golf professional, detailing those ups and downs, and showing the methods they use to combat the pressure.
In the fall of 2020, many thought Clark, could consider himself unlucky to have lost the Bermuda Championship to an inspired Brian Gay in a sudden death play-off. The problem, with such an occurrence is it can take an awful lot of time for the sportsman’s brain to process, and in Clark’s case if anything, this event slowed down his progress in the sport markedly.
Then last year, Clark made the brave decision to seek the help of a sports psychiatrist and in the process, she unlocked his potential big time. I suppose unusually for a male professional sportsman, Clark chose the council of the fairer sex, in the form of Julie Elion, the founder of the Center for the Performance that she founded in 1998.
Elion’s effect was almost instantaneous and revolutionary as within a few months Clark looked a different more assured player on the fairways of the PGA Tour.
Clark Known as ‘A Flusher’
One of the most used expressions in professional golf is “flusher” and that is a pseudonym for a naturally talented ball striker who times the ball noticeably better than most of his peers. In Clark’s case, he fitted that modus operandi succinctly, and his compatriots and good judges were of no doubt that he had the ability to go to the top of the sport.
Clark’s Grinding Years
There is little doubt in the grinding years of gaining experience on the PGA Tour, Clark cut a slightly sad figure, often showing his frustration with his performances. Professional sport is hard on the mind and soul, I have personal experience and when the enjoyment of the game leaves you, what you loved, becomes a chore, and then mental problems begin.
This was the case for Clark, and he had the forethought to recognize he had a problem. That process resonates in all walks of life, and for Clark to take the brave decision to confront how he was underperforming was a huge thing at the time for him, as the Full Swing showed in possibly their most popular episode of series two.
What’s Next for Wyndham Clark?
2024 may not have hit the heights of 2023 for Wyndham Clark but he has consolidated the career improvement well with another PGA win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and multiple top 10s, the best being a runner-up finish at the Players Championship.
The only real downswing of the year was around the major championships but upon writing this he has performed well at the Olympic Games when proudly representing his nation.
With his huge potential now unlocked, the sky is the limit for Wyndham Clark and if he can keep a strong balance with his mindset, more success awaits this talented individual!
