How the NBA Trade Deadline Works and How It Can Impact Futures Markets

While NBA players don’t love the trade deadline, fans of the game absolutely love it when players get shuffled around.

In reality, moving locations mid-season for a player is really tough. It’s not just for the player but also his family. The player has to get acclimated to his new team and find a new home and place to stay while also learning his new teammates’ playing style and the team’s playbook. However, fans of the game love to put together different scenarios in their head that they think make their team better.

After all, the NBA is a business. Trades will shed salary or get younger. Other teams are trying to make additions to their roster that allow them to go deeper into the playoffs. Every team has a plan, and by the NBA trade deadline, these teams try to execute.

Teams with high expectations that are struggling will think about unloading contracts on their bad teams. On the other hand, teams that are having success will look to add a piece or two to the roster that makes the team better.

But you still have to be careful that the additions you make don’t hurt the chemistry that was already built. That’s what makes the NBA trade deadline so interesting. General managers love to get busy, and fans love to dissect each trade and figure out who won or lost a deal. At the moment, nobody knows who won. But you can always look back ten years from the trade to find out which team ended up with the better deal.

How The NBA Trade Deadline Works

The NBA trade deadline takes place 10 days prior to the All-Star Game. In 2024, the NBA Trade Deadline is on Thursday, February 8, 2024, while the NBA All-Star game is set for February 18.

There’s a lot to consider at the NBA trade deadline. You can’t just send players for other players without looking at many different things. There are implications between trades and the salary cap for non-taxpaying teams and taxpaying teams. There are also trade exceptions.

At the trade deadline, you can also use a sign-and-trade format. There are extension-and-trades, cash transfers, one-year contracts that need the player’s consent, waiting periods for new contracts, and many other things to consider. All of this is super complicated. You’re not supposed to understand all of this as a fan. But this is what a front office on an NBA team is reviewing between every trade that is discussed and made.

After the NBA trade deadline, there are no more trades allowed until the current season concludes through the playoffs.

Futures Market

If you’re planning on betting on the NBA, keep in mind that the futures market can’t predict a trade. The odds will mostly stay stagnant until an actual trade is made or a trade gets leaked to the media before it’s finished. Therefore, you can seriously find value in the futures market before the trade deadline concludes. If you believe a team is looking for a top-tier player at the deadline and think they’ll strike a deal with a team to gain a player, betting on the team to win the NBA Championship at a better odds price isn’t a bad idea.

Betting on the futures market has its value. But a lot of the time, it could be a gamble. If you bet on the NBA Championship, only one team will actually win. That’s why the odds are nowhere near +100 or 50%.

For example, before the trade deadline approached, the Indiana Pacers landed Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors for Bruce Brown and three first-round picks. Those first-round picks hold a lot of value to the Raptors. But that won’t affect the Pacers this season.

Instead, the Pacers added Siakam, who will be a primary scoring option for the Pacers, for Bruce Brown, who had struggled in his role with the Pacers after signing a big extension after his time with the Nuggets.

The Pacers were rumored to be in talks with other teams for another potential star. However, despite the rumors, the Pacers were +12000 to win the NBA Title. With the addition of Siakam, the Pacers are now +7000 to win the NBA Championship. That’s a major difference after adding Siakam. With the rumors swirling around the Pacers thinking about adding a star player, you could’ve put money on the Pacers before the addition and added big CLV in the futures market thanks to the NBA Trade Deadline.
