NHL can be very profitable. In fact, if you play your cards right it could be one of the most profitable sports out there, so here are our best tips for betting in the long term at the best NHL betting sites.
What approaches have worked for us throughout the years and which ones should you try based on experts’ opinions?
Trend Betting
Trend betting can be very subjective because sometimes the trend is correlated to the specific bet you looking for a while sometimes a trend can be just a random sequence of events.
Personally, we would always advise never solely relying on a trend to make your pick, its fine if a trend is there to back up what you already believe, but sometimes it can be just random nonsense.
Here is an example: The Boston Bruins were on fire last season, they won 34 of their 41 home games. This is a solid trend as it shows the Bruins are very strong on home ice and even if we look at their record thus far this season, they are 6-1 on home ice. The Bruins have a strong trend of winning on home ice.
A bad example of trend betting might be that the Pittsburgh Penguins are 10-2 in their previous 12 games in November. This is a total random sequence of events and has nothing to do with anything other than the fact they might have played weak teams during this month or played above par or even just played to their normal level.
Sometimes trend betting can be a bit weird but it seems to work, as an example of this we can take a look at the L.A Kings Adrian Kempe. He has gone over his shot total every second game across his previous 12 games, it’s a trend you wouldn’t rely solely on but if you like his over and he went under in the previous game, it might be worth looking into.
Underdogs & Plus Money Bets
Long term sports betting is all about value, many people might think it’s all about having more wins than losses but if you hit enough plus money bets over a long period of time with a less than 50% hit rate, you can find yourself in profit.
Of course not all plus money bets are necessarily underdogs, for example taking a favorite to cover the -1.5 pk line can represent some good value, as many favorites in around -140 are generally +120/+130 to cover the spread.
You could easily combine this with a trend, as an example the Boston Bruins might have a very strong trend of winning on home ice, and they could be facing one of the bottom teams in the league at covering the spread on the road.
This makes it a no brainer as you would look to bet Boston -1.5 at plus money, but as we stated, each and every bet is subjective and you might have some insight knowledge that they won’t cover and that the underdog might cover +1.5 at plus money.
Player Props & Stats
One of the newest ways in which sports bettors like to make their money is with player props and these can represent some fantastic value when betting. Most player props are going to be plus money and personally its were we always find the best value bets.
The best player prop markets are generally player shots, goaltender saves and players to score anytime, but the best thing about betting player props is you can rely very heavily on Stats and although not every bet might win, you should be able to profit long term if the players stats are consistent.
With that said, every bet is going to be different, you might be betting the Tampa Bay Lightings Nikita Kucherov to score every game at +150 and he might cash in plenty of matchups and you could suddenly realise he is facing the best defence in the league and rarely scores against them, of course there’s the chance he might score but some sports bettors might decide to pass and wait until he is back facing a weaker team.

Conclusion
Every sports bettor has their own mind, own beliefs, and approaches, what’s good for the goose might not be good for the gander, in other words what we believe to be a solid, value bet, you might not believe so and this is what creates the betting market.
Overall our main tips for long term betting on the NHL is don’t let a few losing days discourage you, try stick to strong plus money bets and most importantly incorporate as much as you can into making your picks.
Don’t rely on one single stat or one single set of odds, to wrap this up we will leave you with this, a bet which we lost but it goes to show the randomness of NHL betting.
We bet Sidney Crosby over 3.5 shots at +130, now unfortunate he didn’t have four shots in the game as he ended with three shots, but guess what? He scored three goals from those three shots which was in around +15000 NHL betting odds. Stuff like this is going to happen, on the contrary we could have bet him just to score just one goal and he might have ended the game with zero goals and 8 shots.
