The Notorious Rise of Jake Paul: How Controversy Propelled the YouTuber to Fame

Jake Paul

Love or hate him, you have to respect him. There aren’t many of us who haven’t heard of the name Jake Paul, and as influencer boxing continues to dominate social media, it’s unlikely that he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Jake Paul, aged 26, has achieved knockout victories against former UFC champions in the sport of boxing, solidifying his stature as a prominent figure in terms of financial gain for those involved in influencer boxing. His ability to attract large crowds and generate substantial pay-per-view sales has been truly remarkable. He’s also a very profitable figure at offshore betting sites like Bovada (check our Bovada Review) and BetOnline (check our BetOnline Review).

The Younger Paul

Additionally, the younger Paul has demonstrated astute business acumen, taking on the role of part-time promoter and marketer in the world of combat sports. In 2021, he collaborated with his advisor, Nakisa Bidarian, to establish Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), showcasing his entrepreneurial prowess.

It’s easy to dislike Jake, but that’s exactly what he wants. In fact, controversy has been the leading factor of his success, and without the cocky, arrogant personality he presents, he’d likely be just another YouTuber that faded into obscurity.

Disney, Pranks, & Lawsuits

Social media influencers are everywhere, but none are more notorious than Jake Paul. How has he achieved this? Simply with a continuation of controversies and scandals that have subsequently kept him in the public eye. He’s managed to elevate himself into popularity and hatred simultaneously, and it all began with Vine, the only short-form video platform kids used to use before TikTok.

His Vine success wasn’t anything out of the ordinary; most YouTubers began their social media careers on the platform. But Jake, with his notoriety, landed himself a job at Disney in a series “Bizaardvark,” which subsequently amounted to nothing but the start of controversial moments in his life.

And so, the controversy began. Jake was fired from Disney, and the reason behind his release was the non-family-friendly nature of his YouTube channel. However, the Ohio native realized that controversy equaled clicks, and with over 8 million YouTube subscribers at the time, his ability to generate attention was moving at warp speed.

Stunts, pranks, and hostile behavior became the norm for Jake and his “Team10” collective. Neighborhood watch had met their match, as residents described the situation as a “living hell,” resulting in meetings with city officials to discuss a public nuisance lawsuit. While this didn’t come to fruition, the company that owned Jake Paul’s influencer quarters sued him for $2.5 million.

The Scamming Faze

You cannot spark controversy without scamming your fans at least once. Have no fear; Jakey boy ticked this one off his bucket list.

You’d be wrong if you believe the Paul family scams started with Jake’s brother, Logan Paul, and his CryptoZoo nonsense. The younger, more obnoxious brother pathed the way. After telling his young and influential fan base that education isn’t important, the plan was in place in conjunction with a poorly performed rap diss track about teachers.

Paul went on to sell educational programs on how to become an influencer, and he even expanded “Team 10” to “Team 1000,” with promises to his fan base that they’d have a chance at joining his clique.

For just $7, you could receive valuable influencer advice, such as “buy a phone” or “If you like music, create music-based YouTube videos.” Incredible stuff, I know! But for a total of $57, the opportunity to join “Team 1000” was surely worth it. Nope, fans received a collection of videos with poor advice and nothing more, as “Team 1000” never surfaced.

Controversial Comments, Inappropriateness, and Racial Slurs

A vlog announcing his virginity, check. Creating content with a famous pornstar when the majority of his fan base were children, check. Dropping the N-Bomb on multiple occasions, check.

And let’s not forget his “marriages” to Erika Costell and Tana Mongeau, where Paul charged his audience to view a wedding livestream. That’s two fake weddings, just for clarification.

His efforts to aggravate the areas where he resided continued, as the City of Calabasas wasn’t best pleased when he hosted a party during the height of the pandemic.

To list the full extent of Paul’s controversies would take a lifetime, but here are some of the noteworthy moments we’ve missed:

  • The FBI executed a federal search on Paul’s premises.
  • Paul openly expressed how he believed Covid-19 was a scam.
  • Two women accused Paul of sexual assault.
  • Puerto Rico officials investigated Paul when a video of him driving over protected beaches was released.

Leveraging the Bad Guy Persona

As of 2023, he’s left the pranks behind him, and combat sports is a passion that’s somewhat humbled his escapades. However, he hasn’t forgotten how to market himself, and the disdain from the public feeds right into his boxing promotion.

In fact, you could say that combat sports is perfect for Paul, as boxing talent is just half of the sport. Promotion is the other half; if anyone knows how to capitalize from controversy, it would be this guy.

The process of self-mythologizing continues to grow through each news conference and tweet, generating a constant stream of content that he maintains control over. Paul once shared his hesitation to embrace the role of the villain that others have portrayed him as, almost suggesting that his reputation is not a result of his own choices and the way he has amassed his wealth.

However, it is worth noting that this is precisely the response one would expect from a villain.
