NCAA Football Odds: WKU-NMSU & North Texas-Tulsa Picks

Thursday does not have a ranked matchup or a playoff heavyweight, and that is exactly why the board is interesting. The Thursday college football odds give bettors two games with spreads shorter than a field goal, where home field, schedule strength and one bad fourth-quarter possession can decide both the game and the ticket.

Western Kentucky visits New Mexico State as a small underdog, while Tulsa is barely favored against North Texas. Anyone comparing prices across top US betting sites should pay more attention than usual to the moneyline here. When spreads sit around one or two points, paying a little extra to remove the spread can sometimes make more sense than trying to squeeze value out of a tiny number.

Western Kentucky at New Mexico State: The Records Hide Different Stories

The basic numbers make this look simple. Western Kentucky and New Mexico State are both 1-3, and the Aggies are favored by roughly 2.5 points at home, with the total around 57.5.

The records, however, deserve context.

WKU spent the first three weeks on the road against Nevada, Georgia and Indiana before finally returning home and beating Mercyhurst 52-7. That schedule was brutal enough to distort almost any early-season stat sheet. New Mexico State also enters 1-3, but its latest result was a 42-18 home loss to New Mexico in which two third-quarter turnovers helped turn a competitive first half into a blowout.

The Conference USA opener details also show why this matters beyond one Thursday bet: both teams are beginning league play, so neither can simply treat this as another early-season tune-up.

The market has moved toward New Mexico State from roughly -1 or -1.5 to -2.5.

That is enough movement for me to look the other way.

Pick: Western Kentucky +2.5

WKU has already been through three road games, including trips to Georgia and Indiana. That does not make the Hilltoppers good automatically, but it does mean this environment should not feel overwhelming.

New Mexico State has home field, yet laying nearly a field goal with an offense that has struggled to finish drives is uncomfortable.

If the game is as close as the market expects, those 2.5 points matter.

Betting lean: Western Kentucky +2.5

Moneyline lean: WKU +110 to +115 as a smaller play

Prediction: Western Kentucky 27, New Mexico State 24

The spread is the safer bet. The moneyline is for bettors willing to trade that protection for a better return.

North Texas at Tulsa: The Road Split Is Hard to Ignore

North Texas-Tulsa may be the better game.

Tulsa is 3-1 and sitting around -1 to -1.5, with the total again near 57.5. The moneyline is only around -115 to -120, which makes the straight-up option especially interesting.

North Texas has been explosive. The Mean Green scored 44 against UNLV and 63 against Houston Christian.

There is one problem: both of those games were at home.

North Texas is 0-2 on the road, losing 52-16 at Indiana and 49-35 at Texas State. The offense can score, but the defense has not traveled well.

Tulsa’s profile is almost the reverse. The Golden Hurricane are 2-0 at home, beating Oklahoma State 24-10 and East Texas A&M 42-0. They also won at Sam Houston before Arkansas handed them a 34-6 reality check last week.

The American Conference opener is also getting a national ESPN window, and Tulsa has already shown it can handle H.A. Chapman Stadium better than North Texas has handled road football.

That is the matchup clue I trust most.

Why Tulsa Moneyline Makes More Sense Than the Spread

There is not much reason to get cute here.

If Tulsa is -1 or -1.5 and the moneyline costs roughly -115, the difference in price is small enough that I would rather remove the spread entirely.

A Tulsa win by one point would cash the moneyline. At -1.5, that same result loses the spread ticket.

That distinction becomes valuable in a game the market already sees as almost even.

Best bet: Tulsa moneyline around -115

Spread lean: Tulsa -1 if the moneyline price becomes expensive

Prediction: Tulsa 30, North Texas 27

North Texas has enough offense to keep the game uncomfortable. Tulsa simply has the more convincing combination of home form and defensive stability.

Thursday’s Best Two Bets

These games require different approaches.

With Western Kentucky, the value comes from taking the points. The Hilltoppers’ 1-3 record looks ugly, but the schedule explains part of that, and New Mexico State has not shown enough to make laying 2.5 appealing.

With Tulsa, the value comes from removing the spread. A moneyline near -115 is a small premium for avoiding the possibility that a one-point Tulsa victory turns a correct handicap into a losing spread bet.

For bettors looking beyond Thursday, the full Week 5 betting card has much bigger names. Thursday is different. These are games where the market says the teams are close, so the edge comes from understanding the number rather than chasing the logo.

Thursday College Football Odds Verdict

The Thursday college football odds offer two nearly even games but two different betting lessons.

Western Kentucky +2.5 is the better side in Las Cruces because the Hilltoppers have already survived a difficult road-heavy opening month and now get points against another 1-3 team.

Tulsa is the stronger straight-up bet. The Golden Hurricane have been reliable at home, while North Texas has allowed 101 points across its two road losses.

My Thursday card is straightforward:

Western Kentucky +2.5

Tulsa moneyline

Projected scores: WKU 27, New Mexico State 24 and Tulsa 30, North Texas 27.

Neither game needs a complicated theory. With spreads this small, the best bet is often the one that respects how close the matchup really is.
