The UFC harbors a collection of the most exceptional mixed martial artists globally. Hence, it is unsurprising that fans at UFC betting sites frequently engage in discussions regarding the relative prowess of these top-tier fighters.

In addition to its weekly updated rankings for each weight class, the UFC also maintains its pound-for-pound rankings, which consist of 15 names.

In celebration of another successful year for the UFC, Today’s Lines has formulated its own rankings of the top 5 pound-for-pound male UFC fighters.

#5 Sean O’Malley

Sean O’Malley has been a controversial and polarizing figure in the UFC since he joined the organization. His ascent has been scrutinized by many who say that he benefited from advantageous pairings and deliberately evaded specific opponents. However, “Sugar” managed to get a championship bout via successive wins, including a significant victory against former champ Petr Yan in 2022.

Despite skepticism, he swiftly dispelled doubts when he confronted Aljamain Sterling in the Octagon during UFC 292, accomplishing this feat in just over five minutes. Regardless of one’s personal feelings towards him, it is certain that the “Sugar” show has garnered a significant following. At 28, this young fighter has achieved the status of bantamweight champion and is on the verge of becoming a superstar.

I understand I’ll receive similar criticism as “Suga” for placing him in my top-five rankings. Sure, he’s only competed once in 2023, but the fashion in which he achieved his bantamweight title win deserves a spot on this list.

Sterling was riding a 9-fight win streak and entered the contest as a -250 betting favorite at top sportsbooks. O’Malley defied the odds and did it in a dramatic fashion when delivering an emphatic KO finish.

#4 Leon Edwards

Life as a UFC competitor couldn’t get much better for Britain’s Leon Edwards of late.

In 2022, he achieved both the Knockout of the Year and Comeback of the Year, marking a remarkable moment in UFC history. This year, he solidified his position as the top-ranked welterweight in the world.

Kamaru Usman was the clear frontrunner for their third fight at UFC 286 in March. Considering that Usman was leading with three rounds to one prior to Edwards’ unexpected head-kick knockout at UFC 278, it seemed logical. The prevailing belief was that the victory was a fortuitous occurrence and that Usman would regain the championship belt. However, on this occasion, Edwards unequivocally eliminated any uncertainty. He systematically dismantled Usman in striking exchanges and successfully defended against 11 out of 15 takedown attempts, ultimately securing a decisive victory and maintaining his hold on the 170-pound championship.

Edwards further established his rightful position as the welterweight champion in the last UFC fight of the year, triumphing over former interim champion Colby Covington in a one-sided unanimous decision at UFC 296. Although the bout may not have been highly entertaining, Edwards demonstrated composure by controlling the central position of the Octagon and delivering more strikes than Covington during most of the 25-minute duration.

The clash was highly laden with emotions after Covington made a vulgar remark about Edwards’ deceased father during the prefight press conference only two days before the event. Edwards said that Covington’s derogatory remarks had disturbed him, but he maintained his composure, which did not impact his performance. The champion effortlessly demonstrated his superiority in a stylistic clash that was perceived as challenging, effectively silencing detractors once more.

#3 Jon Jones

Upon Jon Jones’ triumphant return to the UFC in March following a three-year hiatus, when he secured the heavyweight championship by swiftly submitting Ciryl Gane in the initial round, critics were convinced that the American had solidified his status as the G.O.A.T in MMA history. Many fans believed he should immediately be ranked at the top of the pound-for-pound lists. Indeed, Jones’s triumph was undeniably remarkable, especially considering the method by which it was accomplished and the circumstances surrounding the 36-year-old’s first appearance in the heavyweight division.

Additionally, the previous two-time light-heavyweight champion’s performance was sufficient to immediately secure the No. 3 spot in our rankings. Nevertheless, his limited activity prevents him from reaching our top position, and this setback was further exacerbated by his injury in October, resulting in an approximate eight-month absence from competition.

This unfortunate event also disrupted his scheduled confrontation with the esteemed heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic, widely regarded as the greatest of all time at heavyweight. The future plans for Jones are now uncertain. However, a potential match against interim champion Tom Aspinall to unify the titles remains possible.

#2 Islam Makhachev

Many skeptics disregarded the true caliber of Islam Makhachev’s skills, and certain individuals questioned if he merited a chance to compete for the lightweight championship against Charles Oliveira.

Nevertheless, he demonstrated his undeniable potential as the successor to the lightweight legend Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 280, by successfully submitting Oliveira, the individual who holds the record for the highest number of submissions in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Since then, he has consistently enhanced his reputation and solidified his position among the top-ranked fighters in the world, regardless of weight class. During his initial two title defenses, he faced the formidable opponent Alexander Volkanovski, who held the featherweight championship and remained undefeated in the division. The most recent of these was an unequivocal first-round knockout at UFC 294.

#1 Sean Strickland

Enduring a Sean Strickland interview or news conference may sometimes be a frustrating encounter. However, despite his vulgar and offensive language, it is undeniable that he possesses exceptional fighting skills.

However, as the transition from 2022 to 2023 occurred, few individuals truly believed that Strickland would emerge victorious in a UFC middleweight championship bout.

In 2022, Sean Strickland experienced his second consecutive loss in a bout against Jared Cannonier. It was widely unexpected that he would conclude the year as the holder of a UFC title.

Strickland’s presence in the championship picture was so insignificant that he spontaneously decided to replace another fighter with only eight days’ notice to compete against Nassourdine Imavov in the UFC’s first main event of 2023. Ultimately, that might have been the optimal choice he could have taken. Strickland regained momentum by securing a unanimous decision victory against Imavov, initiating one of the most improbable journeys toward a UFC championship in the sport’s history.

Strickland competed in his second Octagon bout of the year, facing UFC newcomer Abus Magomedov in a Fight Night main event in July. He emerged victorious with a second-round technical knockout (TKO). However, these victories did not warrant a championship opportunity that became irrelevant.

Dricus Du Plessis was anticipated to contend against Adesanya for the championship in September but sustained an injury. The UFC chose to provide Strickland the opportunity to compete for the championship instead, resulting in what was anticipated to be one of the most straightforward matches for Adesanya.

It was the complete opposite.

Strickland successfully knocked down Adesanya during the opening round of the UFC 293 main event and maintained his dominance throughout the fight. “Tarzan” exerted constant pressure on Adesanya during the fight, surpassing the former kickboxing star in terms of strikes, and ultimately claimed the championship in one of the most significant upsets in the history of MMA.
