Throughout a legendary career that may never be matched, Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0-0) collected one of the most authoritative pro-MMA records in the sport’s history—a record identified by dominant victories, a drowning style and a unique characteristic that made him one of the most interesting athletes of his generation.

Yet, despite his unstoppable nature, Nurmagomedov’s legacy is not without its complexities. His retirement, considered by many as one of the most premature in sports history, has not only left a void in the octagon but also sparked debates and discussions, adding another layer to his already fascinating story.

Khabib: Fighting Bears in Dagestan to UFC G.O.A.T

Khabib’s relentless in-cage style was honed long before he entered the UFC octagon. Born in 1988, he was raised in the rugged mountains of Dagestan, where his late father, Abdulmanap, a respected wrestler turned coach, dedicated his life to training and guiding Dagestan’s underprivileged youth, steering them away from Islamic extremism. This early upbringing and training, filled with discipline and perseverance, laid the foundation for Khabib’s future success.

Three days before his ninth birthday, Khabib underwent a test from his father, and little did he realize it would later become synonymous with his fighting style, the savage sambo wrestling credentials that assisted him in becoming a legend of combat sports.

Khabib’s father led him outside to a tree, where a bear cub was chained. This was a test of his resilience and determination, a testament to his early training in the rugged mountains of Dagestan. Even before being double-digit in age, ‘The Eagle’ was no stranger to Dagestani culture, and instead of questioning his father, he got straight to work, showcasing the grit and determination that would later define his career.

Without hesitation, Khabib wrestled with the bear, tucked his chin, and, fortunately, avoided being eaten alive.

Nurmagomedov: One of the Most Popular Muslim Athletes Ever

Over twenty years after his unforgettable clash with a bear, Khabib gathered a pro fighting record of 29 straight victories, thirteen of which took place under the UFC banner, MMA’s most dominant promotion. His undefeated record is comparable to the unforgiving wrestling and pace he used, time and time again, to demoralize anyone standing in front of him.

Khabib’s relentless grappling abilities were consistent in the UFC’s most talent-stacked division, and his dominance is why many consider him the greatest fighter in the sport’s history. With a position as the No.1 pound-for-pound best, he’d also garnered the respect of Muslims worldwide, and in terms of popularity, he would only fall to Egypt’s Mohammad Salah in this regard.

While Khabib has fought and destroyed some of the best fighters on earth, just like Jose Aldo was Conor McGregor’s propellant, McGregor was Khabib’s shining moment. In a fight dubbed “the biggest fight in UFC history,” an intense rivalry between the sport’s biggest sport and ‘The Eagle,’ didn’t faze the Dagestani like it had previous opponents of ‘Notorious.’ Khabib was focused like no other, dominated most of the fight, and forced McGregor to tap in the fourth round, thus retaining his lightweight title.

Khabib Retires Before His Time

The unparalleled success of Khabib’s octagon legacy was also matched and heightened by his respect, lack of ego, and continuous commitment to the culture and values he’d been raised on. Most fighters in a position of power, sitting atop the fighting world, cannot maintain humility and a respectful nature like Khabib did, and he would always highlight the importance of his team, coaches, and those supporting him when discussing his position as a prominent figure of MMA.

Of course, it wasn’t always plain sailing, as Khabib was no stranger to setbacks. Personal tragedy, the pressure of the spotlight, injuries, and out-of-cage controversies gave critics their fair share of headlines. But through all of this, he remained focused, stayed dedicated to the craft, and fuelled his success with this motivation from these experiences.

Unfortunately, one of the most memorable moments of Khabib’s career arrived when his retirement from the sport was announced in 2020. Following yet another dominant performance, this time over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, ‘The Eagle’ gave an emotional post-fight speech, calling for his retirement, the primary reason being the passing of his father.

There was widespread uproar and pleas from the MMA community, but UFC President Dana White couldn’t change his mind. Khabib was certain that, in retirement, he was honoring his father’s legacy how he knew best and decided to pursue a life that didn’t involve active competition.

One of the greatest UFC champions stepped away from the sport during the peak of his professional career, and while many unanswered questions remain, his in-cage accomplishments and undefeated record cannot be denied… Khabib Nurmagomedov is, and will always be, thrown into the G.O.A.T conversation, and he’ll forever be considered a true legend of mixed martial arts.
